Château d'Yquem 1998 is an exquisite example of Sauternes from one of Bordeaux's most legendary estates. As a Premier Grand Cru Supérieur, this vintage embodies the highest level of the appellation: exceptional ripeness, depth, and an already astonishing complexity that continues to unfold with each bottle. Yquem is considered a benchmark for botrytized wines, its grapes meticulously hand-harvested to achieve a balance of concentrated fruit, delicate sweetness, and a long, elegant structure. Critics such as Falstaff, Parker, Jancis Robinson, Jeff Leve, and Wine Spectator praise the exceptional balance of fruit, spice, and aging potential of this vintage.

In the glass, a rich, honeyed nose unfolds, revealing notes of dried apricots, ripe peaches, orange marmalade, beeswax, and a delicate hint of almond. On the palate, the wine displays a silky texture, supported by a vibrant, well-integrated acidity that lends freshness to the sweet wine. Aromatically, candied citrus fruits, dates, and a touch of spice intertwine with a fine mineral structure; the finish is long, elegant, and characterized by lingering warmth.

The optimal drinking window for this vintage is roughly between 2005 and 2030, although individual bottles may continue to develop complexity beyond this period depending on storage conditions. Food pairing recommendation: Foie gras or terrines, aged Roquefort cheese, or a pear tart with almond brittle – all complemented by the wine's sweet fruitiness and enhanced by spicy notes in the finish. A cheese platter with walnuts or an apricot dessert, which harmoniously picks up the notes of fine honey, is also ideal.

    LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

    HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

    THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

    COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
