Château Haut-Brion 1988

Château Haut-Brion 1988, a classic example of the Graves region and one of the Premier Grand Cru Classé wines in the Bordeaux classification system. The 1988 vintage is characterized by ripe fruit, fine structure, and remarkable longevity – qualities that have defined Château Haut-Brion for decades. The estate, one of the most prestigious addresses in Pessac-Léognan, works with gravel and clay soils, low yields, and precise barrel aging. Critics from Falstaff magazine, Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, Jeff Leve, and Wine Spectator praise its balance of fruit, cedar, and mineral depth, making this bottle an exemplary expression of the estate.

In the glass, Château Haut-Brion 1988 displays a deep, garnet-red hue. The nose opens with ripe black cherries, plums, tobacco, cedar, and mineral notes; hints of leather and smoke follow. On the palate, an elegant structure unfolds: velvety tannins, concentrated fruit, well-integrated oak and toasty aromas, and a fine minerality. The wine is linear and long, with a finish that suggests further years of aging.

Food pairing suggestion: This Château Haut-Brion pairs perfectly with roast beef fillet, rack of lamb with herbs, truffle risotto, or aged cheeses such as Comté. A short decanting of 30 to 60 minutes before serving helps to fully open the aromas and soften the tannins.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
