Château Pape Clément 1990 represents one of the legendary vintages in modern winemaking history, combining the historical significance of the estate with the powerful elegance of the Pessac-Léognan terroir. The vineyards are among the oldest documented in France and benefit from gravel-rich topsoils, which impart remarkable minerality and concentration to the vines. The 1990 vintage is considered a milestone in Bordeaux harvests and was characterized by warm summer days and largely ripe grapes. This exceptional climatic situation resulted in a wine that offers both structural firmness and extraordinary harmony.

In tasting, the bottle presents a deep garnet red with slight terracotta hues at the rim. The nose reveals complex layers of dark stone fruit aromas, old-fashioned leather, tobacco nuances, and a clear graphite foundation, perfectly framed by subtle woody notes. On the palate, the arrangement unfolds as rich, polished, and long, guided by balanced tannins and an active acidity that ensures lasting presence in the body. The finish remains intense, oscillating between dark berry fruit and elegant spice components. The optimal drinking maturity begins now and extends gradually over the coming decades. Ideal accompaniments include gently grilled lamb, braised game dishes, and semi-firm mountain cheese.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
