Château Pontet-Canet 2003 Pauillac is a characterful example of the extreme conditions of the 2003 Bordeaux vintage. This Fifth Growth from Pauillac comes from one of the hottest summers of the last decade, which particularly benefited the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety and the estate's traditional blend. Pontet-Canet, modernized under the pioneering leadership of Alfred Tesseron yet classical in its approach, created a concentrated, powerful wine with a distinct structure in this vintage.

On the nose, this Bordeaux reveals intense notes of ripe black berries, plum compote, and subtle roasted notes that betray its barrel-aging program. On the palate, the 2003 presents as full-bodied with warm, velvety tannins and impressive depth of flavor. The acidity is well-integrated, and the fruit dominates the structure, which feels remarkably balanced for a vintage of this intensity. The wine is already enjoyable to drink now but will continue to develop until 2025, with its peak years lying between 2015 and 2022.

This Pauillac pairs excellently with grilled or braised beef, hearty game dishes, and mature cheeses that challenge and enrich the wine's structural richness.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
