Clos Mogador Gratallops 2017 This red wine unites René Barbier's winery philosophy with the older vineyards near his estate in Catalonia's Priorat region. The consistent biodynamic cultivation on deep Llicorella slate encourages extreme root depths, allowing the wine to develop a clean minerality and intense earthiness. The 2017 vintage benefited from dry summer months, which led to smoother tannins and clearly structured fruit. Wild blackberries and dried figs dominate in the glass, complemented by liquorice, red pepper, and a subtly integrated oak note, while a lively acidity makes the drink immediately accessible and simultaneously signals long-term potential.

From 2024, the vintage will reach its drinking peak, extending until approximately 2032, with tertiary facets such as graphite, cedar, and fragrant earth slowly developing during bottle aging. For a perfect pairing, we recommend robust game dishes such as venison medallions with juniper, grilled lamb with thyme, or selected cheese specialties whose fat content ideally balances the velvety texture and dark fruit breadth of the cuvée.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
