The Giacomo Bologna Braida Bricco dell Uccellone 1998 is a mature Barbera from Piedmont that bears the signature of one of Italy’s most legendary wineries. After more than two decades of bottle aging, this wine displays the complexity that has established the reputation of the finest Barbera wines. What you have here is not just a red wine, but a classic with weight and history—a vintage that collectors and connoisseurs have long prized.

In the glass, a dense bouquet of dark fruits, leather, and fine spicy notes develops. The structure is pronounced: the Barbera's typical acidity forms a framework around tannins that have become silkily rounded after years in the bottle. The finish is persistent and mineral, with retronasal aromas that linger—a testament to the quality of this wine and the vintage.

This 1998 is drinking perfectly now; the optimal temperature range is between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius. Decanting before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up. At the table, it pairs well with game dishes, mature cheese, or dark meat—anything that can stand up to and complement the power and spice of the Barbera.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
