Isole e Olena Cepparello 1999 embodies the consistent commitment of Castello di Olena under the leadership of Paolo de Marchi. Its hallmark is the complete renunciation of international grape varieties. As an early precursor to Super-Tuscans, it exclusively combines Sangiovese from Chianti Classico and demonstrates the independence of this terroir. The 1999 vintage benefits from mild autumn days for even grape ripening, leading to a balanced alcohol and acidity spectrum. The winery relies on fermentation at controlled temperatures and twelve months of aging in new French barriques.

In the glass, it shows a deep garnet with hints of orange. The nose focuses on ripening wild cherries, black fruits, and subtle notes of spices and lightly smoked wood. On the palate, firm but soft tannins unfold, flanked by elegant minerality and a long, clean finish. The condition confirms a wine that has already reached its peak and is now in an enjoyable stage. A good pairing can be found with slow-cooked lamb, wild-breaded duck, or intensely spicy hard cheeses.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
