Maximin Grünhaus Abtsberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2016 owes its quality to a traditional family estate in the upper Middle Moselle, which has for generations relied on extreme hillside locations and deliberately limited minimal yields to ensure maximum extract and bouquet density. The Abtsberg vineyard is characterized by red Devonian slate and fine quartz veins, which gives the must a characteristic minerality and a taut structural framework. The 2016 vintage is generally considered an outstanding reference period, as balanced summer conditions and dry harvest times allowed for perfect physiological ripeness with simultaneously high primary acidity.

In the glass, an intense golden-yellow color is revealed, accompanied by nuances of ripe apricot, citrus citronella, and a dominant slate note on the nose. On the palate, the volume is velvety but possesses a striking backbone, with the acidity perfectly integrated into the fruit. Independent expert evaluations repeatedly highlight the transparent structure and the pronounced aging potential, which emerges through slow redox processes in wooden barrels. Optimal drinking maturity reliably begins in 2025 and extends to the end of the decade 2037, provided dark and temperature-stable storage is guaranteed. Optimal pairings include aged mountain cheese, smoked grayling, or lightly spiced shrimp, whose inherent flavors are brilliantly complemented by the clear acidity of the product.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
