Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli Siepi 1997 is a prestige creation from the historic Castello di Fonterutoli estate, which has successfully cultivated vineyards in Chianti Classico since the fourteenth century. This special cuvée intentionally combines classic Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, achieving remarkable structural depth and high aging potential. The 1997 vintage benefited from an extremely sunny summer and moderate autumn chill, leading to full grape concentration and a balanced acid profile. The meager, calcareous Galestro soils near Greve provide distinctive minerality, while traditional gentle treatment carefully softens the festive tannins.

Upon tasting, the bottle presents itself in rich garnet tones with reddish rim reflections and reveals aromas of dried cranberries, cedar wood, dried herbs, and a subtle smokiness. The structure already appears fully harmonized and supported by a velvety mouthfeel, culminating in a precise, long finish. Mature examples show their best balance between 2022 and 2028, allowing them to develop optimally. This flavor complexity pairs exceptionally well with intense roasted game, slow-cooked pork shoulder, or aged chestnut cheese, bringing out the unparalleled spice dimensions of the wine.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
