Penas Aladas Gran Reserva 2015 combines traditional Spanish grape varietals with innovative high-altitude cultivation in the Toro region. Fernando García's project cultivates Tinta de Toro at over 1,500 meters above sea level, where cold mountain winds stabilize acidity and aromatic differentiation. The deliberately low yield per hectare concentrates the components, while long aging in used French oak barrels gently integrates the natural tannin structure. Industry experts highlight the 2015 vintage as particularly balanced, as warm summer months guaranteed phenolic ripeness and moderate autumn rains created the necessary fluid balance.

The bottle opens with a deep garnet red and subtle orange-brown reflections. The aroma is dominated by ripe wild cherries, accompanied by tobacco notes, polished leather, and fine oak patterns. On the palate, the structure is elegant, the tannins are finely integrated, and the finish has a lingering mineral aftertaste. The optimal drinking maturity extends from the present moment until 2035. Recommended food pairings include slow-braised lamb, game-based main courses, or well-aged hard cheese.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
