With the 1998 Prunotto Barbera d'Asti Costamiole, you bring a mature red wine from Piedmont into your glass. The name Costamiole represents its special origin from a select vineyard belonging to Prunotto. At its heart is Barbera, a grape variety known for its lively acidity and robust fruit profile. The 1998 vintage now lends this wine an essentially historical character, making it an exciting choice for lovers of older Italian red wines.

On the palate, the typical freshness of Barbera combines with the mature aromas of a vintage nearly three decades old. Dark berries, cherry, and dried fruit meet spicy, earthy hints. These are complemented by subtle notes of leather, tobacco, and herbs. The acidity provides tension, while the long bottle aging makes the wine appear significantly rounder and more complex. It is best to open the bottle carefully and give it some time in the glass.

Its mature style pairs particularly well with hearty Piedmontese dishes. Serve it with brasato, braised beef, game, or aromatic pasta with truffles and mushrooms. Aged hard cheese also makes for a convincing accompaniment to this Barbera d'Asti. In this way, the vintage becomes an enjoyable conclusion to a festive dinner.

LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
