Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2018 The Schaefer-Frohlich winery from the Middle Moselle region is one of the pioneers of natural viticulture, relying exclusively on biodynamic farming methods. The present Riesling comes from the steep slate vineyard Felsenberg, whose stony soils lend the grapes a typical mineral sharpness and enormous bone-dry structure. In the warm vintage of 2018, long sunny days ensured optimal phenolic ripeness, while cool night temperatures preserved the fruit-driven freshness and a precise acidity structure. This combination of sun-kissed fruit and cool minerality forms the characteristic foundation of the Grosses Gewächs category.
During tasting, the cuvée impresses with a dense nose of ripe green apple, yellow-fleshed pear, and distinct wet slate. On the palate, it is powerful but not overripe, with fine bitterness and salty minerality forming the backbone. A balanced length of three and a half minutes on the finish underlines its aging potential. Expert circles describe this profile as a paradigm example of single-vineyard vinification. The wine begins to mature in the bottle after only two years of storage and continues to develop continuously until approximately 2036, gradually making complex honey and petrol notes accessible.
It is recommended to pair this wine with cured hake on herb sauce, grilled scallops, or even aged mountain cheese with nutty aromas. The pronounced acidity perfectly balances slightly salty seafood, while the mineral depth enhances poultry dishes with porcini mushrooms or Jerusalem artichokes. A brief aeration just before serving optimizes the aroma development.

Of course, we accept returns within the scope of legal regulations. Provided the goods are in exactly the same condition as purchased, we will refund the full purchase price, excluding shipping costs, if returned within 14 days of receipt.
You must organize the return shipment yourself and also cover the return shipping costs and adequate shipping insurance.
Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.
HIDDEN FEATURES
UV-LIGHT TESTING
Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.
THE DETAILS MATTER
LABELS & PRINTING
We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.
COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
THE CONTENT
Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
