Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto 2002 is a prime example of the Bolgheri terroir: a pure Merlot from Masseto that translates the vintage's heat into concentrated fruit, fine minerality, and velvety tannins. Masseto, the iconic estate near Bolgheri, is known for its uncompromising vineyard work: meticulous grape selection, extended aging in barriques, and careful bottle maturation, which allows the wine to develop its complexity. The 2002 vintage produced ripe, vibrant fruit and a structure that promises longevity; critics such as Falstaff, Parker, Jancis Robinson, Jeff Leve, and Wine Spectator emphasize the greatness of this vintage and the estate's ability to blend terroir and Merlot into an impressive harmony.

In the glass, Masseto 2002 presents a deep garnet color. The bouquet opens with ripe blackcurrants and plums, accompanied by cocoa, graphite, and a subtle smokiness. On the palate, a silky tannin structure, concentrated fruit, spice, and mineral tension are evident; the finish is long, velvety, and lingering, with hints of chocolate and truffle. The complexity continues to develop with aeration, yet remains consistently balanced. Food pairing: A perfect accompaniment to beef tenderloin, venison, or lamb dishes; truffle risotto or mature cheeses such as Pecorino also pair exceptionally well.

    LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

    HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

    THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

    COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
