Weingut Franz Hirtzberger Steinporz Weissburgunder Smaragd 2017 impresses with the typical Wachau elegance and a terroir signature attributed to the Steinporz soil: limestone, clay, and the cool climate of the terraced vineyards lend the wine a fine minerality and structure worthy of the Smaragd category. The 2017 vintage showcases ripe fruit, clear freshness, and precise acidity, as the Franz Hirtzberger winery has stood for precise viticulture in the Wachau for generations. Critics such as Falstaff, Robert Parker, and Jancis Robinson often praise the balance between maturity and finesse inherent in this wine line, making it an exemplary ambassador for the region.

Tasting Note: In the glass, the wine presents a light gold color with delicate green tones. The nose opens with yellow fruit aromas of pear, peach, and apricot, accompanied by a delicate hint of almond and minerality. On the palate, it is creamy yet vibrant, with a successful blend of fruit, acidity, and delicate spice; the long, elegant finish confirms its purity and complexity. Optimal drinking maturity typically extends from approximately 2020 to 2028, with the 2017 vintage still showing harmony in later years. Food Pairing Recommendation: Suitable for asparagus dishes, grilled turbot or trout, creamy risotto, and milder cheeses such as Gouda or Comté.

    LIFE BEFORE...

Where possible, and especially with larger wine cellar purchases, the wine cellars of the previous owners tell us a lot about the storage conditions of the wines. A professionally managed wine cellar usually guarantees perfect storage conditions for the wines. We acquire our wines exclusively from reputable, mostly private wine collectors.

    HIDDEN FEATURES

Many high-quality wines today feature various security features for authentication, such as markings that only become visible under UV light. We check and compare all purchased wines for these features using an extensive database, and if there is even the slightest doubt, we reject the wine.

    THE DETAILS MATTER

We examine wine labels under a microscope to determine their quality, and we check the printed image for any peculiarities that are typical for a particular winery, wine, or vintage. We draw on a large image database to identify any anomalies.

    COLOR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Last but not least, we also examine the wine's composition. Color, turbidity, sediment, and the bubbles in a champagne reveal a lot about the wine's or champagne's condition and potential drinking pleasure.
